Let’s see.. what’s going on with me lately.
I’m 8 episodes into Orange is the New Black… was Donna from That 70s Show always this hot? I think it’s the eyeliner. I love a good cateye.
I’m horribly addicted to threes. My top score is 24,921, which sounds impressive, but not if you hear how often I play.
I’m down 3 out of the 10 pounds I am aiming to lose… and would really rather be eating chocolate than the little bowl (and I do mean little. Prep bowl little) of blueberries next to me.
I love fruit, I do, but a girl needs her chocolate. Not that I’ve cut out chocolate (I would never), but if you’re trying to shed a lumpy tire, not every single baked good can be oozing with chocolate.
That’s how I gained back the 10 (now 7) I have on.
I have been having a hard week.
Just… a lot of things. A lot of things going on.
I feel like I start every post these days with “OMG SO MUCH IS HAPPENING WHY IT DO THIS?”
This year is just my year of funk. Funk like the stinkiness, not like the music.
The music would be way more fun.
But it’s okay because tomorrow I will be face deep in thanksgiving foods.
I’m really good at drowning my sadness and stresses in food.
I love food. Clearly. However, I am nervous to call myself a “foodie” as these days it seems to have a bit of a snobby connotation. Food snob, I certainly am not. I’ll eat ramen and boxed mac & cheese by choice. My favourite french fries are McDonald’s. I realize that those are not the best french fries I’ve ever had in terms of quality and flavour, but I love them. They remind me of my childhood.
Also, Taco Bell isn’t as bad as it seems. Most of the time.
But one rule I generally follow in my baking is if I know I can do better than a box, I do it. Cake mix as an ingredient in a greater crust? Sure. Cake mix to make cake? No, no.
I bought a couple jars of caramel sauce and put them in these bars.
I have a rule that every time I make a brand new recipe, I follow that recipe exactly as it is written. No weird changes, substitutions, adjustments… if I haven’t tasted the recipe yet, how can I already be judging its worth? It’s like people. Wanting to change a person’s shoes before you date them is superficial and mean. Not to mention weird. “Hey, I’d love to go to the movies, but could you wear some polished wingtips instead of those boat shoes? Okay, thanks!”
The rule also gives me a scapegoat. “WHY is this texture so weird, I followed the recipe EXACTLY. Clearly they did something wrong.”
However, I am terrible at following my own rule.
Have you ever added a teabag to your oatmeal while it was cooking? Just to add a little extra something? I don’t always eat oatmeal, but when I do, I like to add in a chai teabag for some extra flavour and zing. All those spices against the mellow oatmeal, it’s an easy way to make a flavoured oatmeal.
So when I read about an oatmeal cookie containing all the spices found in a masala chai tea?
I’m all over that.
Oatmeal is a healthy snack.
Fruits are good for you, therefore jam is good for you.
Coconut ain’t too shabby either.
So clearly these bars are good for you too. Right? At least, that’s what I try to tell myself.
I love bananas foster. The rich, dark, slightly bitter caramel around gooey sweet bananas.
Over ice cream, it’s perfect.
Over oatmeal, it’s breakfast.
